Our Preschool Programs
Alta Plaza Preschool's program addresses the individual, social, emotional and educational needs of children between the ages of 2 ˝ and 5 ˝. The open classroom format is designed around the belief that the younger children benefit from modeling their older peers, while the older children benefit from being the “big kid.” These relationships foster self-esteem and personal growth, essential to the readiness for kindergarten. The children are also given age appropriate activities, with teacher guidance, to continually challenge them and stimulate each child's individual learning process.
Children at Alta Plaza Preschool learn by doing. Independence is fostered in children through exposure to the world around them. Play is child's work. Through activities offered, each child can master skills in the areas of communication, cognitive and physical development and social interaction. By experiencing success in these areas, a child becomes more confident and self-reliant. These positive learning experiences contribute to the development of each child's sense of self and emotional well-being.
The classroom is designed to facilitate self-help in all areas. The children are not dependent upon the teachers for any resources. All appropriate free-play articles are within reach. Paints, paper, pens, crayons, puzzles, books, dramatic play, science activities, water play and other activities are always available.
Alta Plaza Preschool believes in promoting behavior management and behavior modification rather than “disciplining” young children. Children need the security of limits, which tell them what is acceptable as well as what is not acceptable. Teachers are always consistent and firm with their expectations.
Yellow Ducks
The Yellow Ducks are our youngest group of children at Alta Plaza Preschool. Ranging in age from 2 ˝ to approximately 3 ˝, most of these youngsters are fresh to a preschool environment. We instruct our curriculum in fun, creative ways that focus on important issues like socialization, sharing and dealing with our feelings in verbal, non-aggressive ways. After several months, we begin recognizing letters and shapes and have many projects associated with the development of pre-reading skills. We emphasize large-motor skills and prepare the children for fine motor tasks like holding crayons and scissors. Twice-annually, we hold parent-teacher conferences informing them of how their child is developing both socially, emotionally as well as academically, which parents find extremely helpful. We do not require our Yellow Ducks to be potty-trained when entering school, although we encourage them to express this independence when they are ready.
Red Roosters
The Red Roosters are generally between 3˝ and 4˝ years old and in their second year at Alta Plaza Preschool. Building on the foundations laid in the Yellow Duck group, the Red Roosters are focused on learning the fundamental concepts of numbers and letters. We also work on the refinement of gross and fine motor skills, as well as social competence in preparation for the Blue Bird group. Our curriculum provides learning opportunities in a friendly, non-competitive environment through activities that involve games, songs, stories, movement and arts and crafts projects.
Blue Birds
The Blue Birds are the oldest children, ages 4 ˝+. Throughout the year, the children will grow intellectually, physically, emotionally/socially and will be prepared for further kindergarten experience. Children who experience a supportive and challenging but achievable curriculum engage in thinking, reasoning, understanding, grasping concepts and communicating with others. The curriculum will also include dramatic play, art and educational field trips. We provide hands-on help with the kindergarten process and readiness.
